Sudasha Brata: A Celebration of Prosperity and Devotion

Sudasha Brata: A Celebration of Prosperity and Devotion

Certainly! Sudasha Brata (Odia: ସୁଦଶା ବ୍ରତ ଓଷା), also known as Sudasa Vrata, is a significant ritual observed in the state of Odisha, India. Let me share some insights about this unique festival:

1. What is Sudasha Brata?

  • The festival takes place when Shukla Paksha (the waxing phase of the moon), Thursday, and Dashami (the tenth day of the lunar fortnight) align in the Odia calendar.
  • It is a special occasion dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity.
  • Married Odia women perform puja with utmost devotion, praying for the well-being of their entire family.

2. Rituals and Observance:

  • On Sudasha Brata, women wear ten small threads on their hands, symbolizing a commitment for the coming year until the next puja. These threads are prepared with 10 names of Goddess Mahalaxmi.
  • Jhoti, intricate traditional drawings, adorn home walls and floors during this festival.
  • Special pithas (traditional Odia sweets, i.e. Manda Pitha) are prepared and offered to Maa.
  • The primary focus is on invoking blessings for family prosperity and health.

3. Date and Time for 2024:

  • In 2024, the upcoming Sudasha Brata falls on August 15th.
