Dhanu Sankranti marks the beginning of the 9th month according to Odia calender. Sankranti refers to the beginning of a month and Dhanu is the 9th Rashi of Rashi Chakra. The 12 Rashis are referring the 12 months of the year in Odia calender. So the Pousha is the 9th month of the year and the beginning day is celebrated as Dhanu Sankranti.
On this day, a special dish Dhanu Muan (Odia: ଧନୁ ମୁଆଁ) offered to Lord Jagannatha in Odisha. In Odisha, the month of Pousha is considered the month of plenty. Hence, after collecting the harvest a festival of celebration is organized. We people prepare the Danu Muan for this celebration. The Muan is ritualistically prepared and sold between Dhanu Sankranti and Makara Sankranti. Although this sweet is prepared during other months, people prefer to buy it during its annual season.
